This work was done for my wife as a recollection of our stay in Hatteras with our family. The afternoon sun gave shadow to the grasses, accenting the individual stalks and highlighting the surf.

During the fall this year, storm clouds were rolling over our boat harbor one blustery afternoon with the late afternoon light highlighting the boats in the harbor. A good day to be in a protected harbor. I couldn’t decide whether I liked the detail of the sky and the water, so I felt compelled to paint both.

One evening while dining at a waterfront restaurant I was staring outside in my own deep reflection on where my art was taking me. I then suddenly became aware of the scene that was before me and had mesmerized me into that introspection. The beautiful reflections underneath a dock while the sun was setting was a mixture of yellow and purple-blue hues that I had to capture.

This is a work done for a good friend and co-worker from Oklahoma. It reminded me of the unique smell of sagebrush and dampened dust along with the more vibrant colors that come out after a fresh rain on the high plains. If you’ve experienced it, you’ll know what I mean.

This screwpile, cottage-type light is only one of three remaining from forty-five that once served the Chesapeake Bay at the beginning of the twentieth century. This picture represents the lighthouse as it was in the early 1900’s where it was located just off the shore near drum point. It was moved to the Calvert Marine Museum in 1975, where it is meticulously maintained for all of us to enjoy.
