I had the great honor of being the Chief Test Pilot on the CV-22 at its beginning, focusing on development of the mission systems that make it unique from the MV-22. Part of that development was the introduction of the first Terrain Following system for a tiltrotor, that would allow for very low-level flight in mountainous terrain in both helicopter and airplane modes of the aircraft. The mountainous background of the Hindu Kush mountains was chosen for this painting for that reason. The title of this painting reflects the crew coordination in transitioning from helicopter operations toward airplane mode operations. We will hold nacelles at 60 degrees, until the gear is up and then let the pilot know that he is “Clear to go Fast” and rotate them down to 0 degrees (airplane mode).

This is a depiction of my very first flight in the V-22. I was surprised how fast the aircraft decelerated as I brought the nacelles off of the down-stops and converted from airplane mode flight to rotor-borne flight. I was so surprised, that the T-2 chase aircraft went right by even though he had dirtied up the aircraft as much as possible and was at minimum throttle setting. The pilot in the chase aircraft and my copilot in the V-22 are fast friends to this day.

The title of this painting reflects the unique nature of the testing depicted here. This scene represents flight tests of the Air Force Special Operations CV-22 that were done with respect to the development of its Terrain Following (TF) capabilities. Here, two aircraft are simultaneously flying TF in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains near Edwards Air Force Base. These test aircraft were in fact partially modified MV-22 aircraft that were used as part of the EMD testing phase of the CV-22; hence the lighter color scheme as compared to the current CV-22. For me this was some of the most interesting testing in that it combined performance, handling qualities, and systems testing through an integrated multi-disciplinary teaming effort.

This was a comission for a test pilot friend of mine and prints are not available.
