“Clear To Go Fast”

By Marty Shubert
Oil on Canvas, 16″ x 20″

I had the great honor of being the Chief Test Pilot on the CV-22 at its beginning, focusing on development of the mission systems that make it unique from the MV-22. Part of that development was the introduction of the first Terrain Following system for a tiltrotor, that would allow for very low level flight in mountainous terrain in both helicopter and airplane modes of the aircraft. The mountainous background of the Hindu Kush mountains was chosen for this painting for that reason. The title of this painting reflects the crew coordination in transitioning from helicopter operations toward airplane mode operations. We will hold nacelles at 60 degrees, until the gear is up and then let the pilot know that he is “Clear to go Fast” and rotate them down to 0 degrees (airplane mode).
